One of the world's most renowned Open Source Committers is to visit
Ireland in January to present to Irish Java developers at the Irish Java Technologies Conference in Dublin.
Jeff Genender has a distinguised pedigree of software development. Originally from Chicago, he is now CEO of Savoir Technologies in Colorado, a software development company specialising in Java, Oracle and .NET technologies.
Aside from the day job, Jeff is an Apache member and committee member for Apache Geronimo, and is an active committer to projects such as OpenTerracotta, OpenEJB, ServiceMix, Mojo and Mina, which he is to present at the IJTC.
Apache Mina
Mina is a TCP framework that allows you to write servers/clients based on NIO that are very high performance. In fact Jeff was responsible for writing the AsyncHttpClient which scales astronomically (its a part of Mina) - and much better than anything else out there, including Commons HttpClient. It's so good that apparently eBay uses it!
Mina basically allows you to write protocols with a few java classes, which allows you to write powerful servers and clients w/o a lick of needed to muck with TCP/Socket code.
Jeff told us "I've suggested Mina because its cool from a coding perspective and is a smaller open source project which is very interesting but that many developers may not be aware of. I hope to share the knowledge with the Irish Java community so that they can take it back and use the knowledge."
The Irish Java Technologies Conference is designed to bring the very best arrangement of technology speakers to the stage in Ireland and open their knowledge up to the wider Irish Java community. It follows on from IJTC 2007 where around 300 Java developers attended the event. This years conference is sponsored by JBoss, Hosting 365, Accenture Technology Services and Eircom and takes place in Dublin on 7th and 8th January.
